Transformation of an icon: the former post office in Hybernská Street comes to life under the guidance of an architect from the Zaha Hadid team

Prague continues to transform - and one of the latest projects to make its modern history is the redevelopment of the former post office building on Hybernska Street. This landmark building will soon begin to change under the direction of the team of architect Jakub Klaška of Klaska ltd, who has worked on the iconic Masaryčka project with the prestigious Zaha Hadid Architects studio.
It is the legacy of the famous architect Zaha Hadid that gives the project its international dimension and high expectations. The aim is to create a multifunctional space that connects the past with the future - with respect for history and at the same time taking into account the needs of the 21st century.
A discovery under the façade: a historic structure becomes a design element
Behind the walls of the former post office lies a surprise - the original station structure with its typical arched pillars. These historic elements will be preserved and sensitively integrated into the modern interiors, giving the building a strong character and unique atmosphere. The architects do not want to make history a museum, but a living part of the new space.
Technical challenges: conservation and historic underground
The transformation of the building is technically very challenging. Not only do the designers have to deal with the strict heritage protection, but also with the underground infrastructure - including the old castle sewer and the extensive network of collectors. As Luboš Bóga from Penta Real Estate, the investor in the project, points out, it is the thorough technical solution of these obstacles that will be the key to the success of the entire reconstruction.
HYBE - a new urban centre for work, rest and shopping
The project with the working title HYBE will bring modern facilities for a variety of uses to the centre of Prague. Shops will be built on the ground floor and offices and co-working centres on the upper floors. Such a multifunctional concept will ensure that the building will be alive from morning to night.
In addition, the building will be connected to the neighbouring The Cloud One Hotel Prag and a pedestrian connection to the Masaryk Station area is planned. This will create a new urban node that will connect important parts of the centre and offer a natural continuation of the modern Na Florenci Boulevard.
Hybernská continues to grow - with respect for the past and a vision for the future
Hybernská Street has a rich history and an ambitious future ahead of it. The redevelopment of the old post office is not just about the building itself - it is a step towards further revitalising this important Prague thoroughfare. Thanks to his eye for detail and experience with large-scale projects, architect Jakub Klaška seems to be the ideal author for this transformation.
The entire project, which involves an investment of around half a billion crowns, will offer over 7,000 m² of modern space. If everything goes according to plan, a new chapter in the site's history could be written by the end of the year - and with it a new story of modern urban architecture in the heart of Prague.
